LEGO® Lele Boxes Comes to Beijing Jingyan Foundation’s Partner Hospitals
To tackle the shortage of toys and educational resources for children from disadvantaged backgrounds battling severe illnesses and to provide emotional support during their hospital stays, the Beijing Jingyan Foundation has recently joined forces with the China Development Research Foundation. As part of this collaboration, the LEGO Group’s "Lele Box Plan" will be introduced to Jingyan Foundation's partner hospitals. This initiative aims to provide children with opportunities for creative play, learning, and personal growth during their recovery.
Currently, Lele Boxes have been distributed to Jingyan Foundation’s partner hospitals in Guangdong, including Shenzhen Children's Hospital and Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center. To ensure effective implementation, the Foundation, in collaboration with the LEGO Group and the hospitals, has organized in-person training sessions to help frontline social workers better understand the usage and specific requirements of the Lele Box.
The "Lele Box," developed by the LEGO Group, is a philanthropic toolkit that includes over 12 sets of “Six Bricks,” 12 LEGO minifigures, base plates, and various LEGO bricks designed for simultaneous use by 15 to 20 children. The kit also comes with game guides, building instructions, and picture books. The “Six Bricks” program, created by the LEGO Foundation for global child development projects, uses simple yet engaging activities to help children enhance cognitive skills, creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.
In front of LEGO bricks, every child is a born creator. From the moment they start building, their imagination takes flight. Through play, they construct boundless worlds from their own creativity and joyfully share their creations with others.
These colorful bricks carry love and care from countless people, traveling great distances to silently accompany children battling illnesses. Through play, these children get the chance to feel, explore, imagine, and share. More importantly, they are granted the same opportunities for growth and development as any other child.
Since 2019, the LEGO Group has launched the Lele Box Care Plan for Children in Need in China. This year, the Beijing Jingyan Foundation officially joined the initiative. As part of the collaboration, the LEGO Group will donate Lele Boxes to the Foundation and provide training and ongoing support to ensure successful implementation.
In discussing the partnership, a representative from the Beijing Jingyan Foundation shared: “We are donating Lele Boxes to our partner hospitals and will continue organizing activities in collaboration with them. Beyond simply providing LEGO bricks to accompany children through their challenging treatments, we hope to help these children develop a range of skills, spark their imagination, and foster creativity and a love for learning.”
As part of this initiative, the Foundation invited LEGO Group staff to conduct training sessions for frontline social workers at Shenzhen Children's Hospital. These workshops aimed to explore how to inspire and guide children in “playful learning.”
During the training, participants engaged with the five characteristics of play experiences and the five competencies for holistic development. They explored the limitless possibilities of the Lele Box, learning about activity design, facilitation techniques, and practical implementation strategies. The sessions also included insights and best practices from past experiences, offering a comprehensive understanding of the project implementation details.
Looking ahead, the Lele Box Plan will expand to other partner hospitals of the Beijing Jingyan Foundation. These colorful LEGO bricks will bring comfort and companionship to children facing temporary hardships, fostering curiosity and encouraging exploration and learning in real-world service scenarios. Through play, children can experience the joy of creativity and discover new possibilities for growth.
