Jingyan helps Yunnan and fights thalassemia hand in hand
Thalassemia, abbreviated as "thalassemia", is an inherited hemolytic anemia caused by reduced or complete deletion of globin peptide chain synthesis due to gene mutation or deletion, and is an important birth defect of global concern.
Data show that about 350 million people worldwide are carriers of thalassemia genes. In China, there are more than 30 million thalassemia gene carriers, including about 300,000 patients with intermediate and severe thalassemia. As one of the 10 high-incidence areas of thalassemia in China, the carrier rate of thalassemia gene mutation in Yunnan Province is 12.5%, and the southwest and local ethnic minorities are the high-incidence areas of thalassemia.
Thalassemia is a typical hereditary disorder that is refractory to treatment and preventable. From the onset of the disease, thalassemia patients require lifelong, regular and timely blood transfusions and iron removal therapy, and if left untreated, children often die before the age of 5 years. Currently, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is the only possible cure for thalassaemia, but it is more restrictive and expensive. Thalassemia not only seriously threatens the life, health and quality of life of patients, but also brings a heavy mental and economic burden to families and society.
Since its official launch in 2018, Beijing Jingyan Charity Foundation's thalassemia relief project - Thalassemia Action has set up a rescue center in Yunnan, and has successively cooperated with the First People's Hospital of Yunnan Province, the 920th Hospital of the PLA Joint Logistics Support Force, Kunming Children's Hospital and other institutions to continue to help thalassemia patients in Yunnan.
The Healthy China Tour set off again, and the seventh stop entered Baoshan, Yunnan
"Healthy China Tour" is a series of activities officially launched by Beijing Jingyan Public Welfare Foundation in 2023, and we invite authoritative experts to go deep into areas with high incidence of thalassemia to conduct free free clinics and screenings, actively help children with thalassemia, and let more people understand thalassemia knowledge. At the same time, it will cooperate with the health department and authoritative hospitals to organize and carry out training on thalassemia prevention and control for grassroots medical personnel, promote the systematic learning of thalassemia professional knowledge of grassroots doctors, improve the diagnosis and treatment level of grassroots medical institutions, and help the government to carry out the implementation of thalassemia prevention and control.
Baoshan City is located in the southwest border of China, with jurisdiction over Longyang District, Tengchong City, Shidian County, Longling County, Changning County 1 district, 1 city and 3 counties, with 12 ethnic minorities of Yi, Bai, Dai, Lisu, Hui, Miao, Brown, Wa, Achang, Jingpo, Manchu and De'ang, and is a high-incidence area of thalassemia in Yunnan Province.
This event is the second time that Beijing Jingyan Public Welfare Foundation has established a relationship with Baoshan. In February 2023, Beijing Jingyan Public Welfare Foundation's "Guarding the First Heart" Congenital Heart Disease Relief Project carried out congenital heart disease screening and free clinic activities in Baoshan, and on the basis of covering 300,000 people in the initial stage, authoritative experts were invited to carry out a week-long free clinic activity in Baoshan. This time, for the sake of children with thalassemia, Beijing Jingyan Public Welfare Foundation once again entered Baoshan.
From November 14th to 18th, the Healthy China Tour came to Baoshan City, Yunnan Province to carry out thalassemia free diagnosis and screening and thalassemia diagnosis and treatment ability training courses. This Baoshan Station activity is the seventh stop of the Healthy China Tour, and it is also the second time that the Healthy China Tour has entered Yunnan after Dehong Prefecture and Xishuangbanna, and fought thalassemia with various departments, grassroots doctors and thalassemia families in Yunnan.
Doctor training and expert free consultation are used to protect children with thalassemia
On the morning of November 15, the launching ceremony of Healthy China Xingbaoshan Station was officially held. Relevant leaders of Baoshan Municipal Health Commission, Baoshan Red Cross Society and other departments delivered speeches respectively.
In order to improve the diagnosis ability and prevention and control knowledge of doctors in primary hospitals, Beijing Jingyan Public Welfare Foundation, together with Baoshan Municipal Health Commission, Baoshan Red Cross Society and other relevant departments, provided a one-day training on thalassemia-related medical knowledge for pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology and marriage examination doctors in various counties and township hospitals in Baoshan City.
Doctors from the Department of Hematology of the First People's Hospital of Yunnan Province gave lectures on the current situation of thalassemia in Yunnan Province, standardized treatment, diagnosis, diagnosis, long-term preparation, postoperative management, etc., and more than 120 local doctors participated in the training.
In this activity, experts from the Department of Hematology of the First People's Hospital of Yunnan Province also came to Baoshan Maternal and Child Health Hospital to carry out a free clinic activity with the theme of "Paying Attention to Thalassemia and Paying Equal Attention to Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment".
In the hall on the first floor of the outpatient clinic of the new hospital of Baoshan Maternal and Child Health Hospital, the experts patiently provided diagnosis and treatment services for each patient, inquired about their symptoms in detail, carefully examined the body, checked the relevant medical records and checklists, patiently inquired about the child's past medical history, and provided screening and prevention suggestions and diagnosis and treatment consulting services for the children and their parents for thalassemia transfusion matching, reproductive genetics, etc.
For children who meet the criteria of the Zhuai Thalassemia Initiative, Jingyan Foundation will further follow up on their treatment and provide funding according to their conditions and family conditions to help them complete hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and postoperative rejection treatment.
In the next few days, the staff and volunteers of the Zhuai Thalassemia Action Project will visit Baoshan, Dali and other places, pay return visits to some children who have returned home after transplant surgery, and visit the families of children who are about to undergo surgery, so as to gain an in-depth understanding of the actual needs of children and their families, and understand the implementation of local thalassemia prevention and control policies.
Building love for six years, in order for "zero land poverty" to come as soon as possible
Promoting the prevention and eventual elimination of thalassemia has always been the long-term goal of the Thalassemia Initiative. Since the launch of the project in 2018, Jingyan Foundation has been adhering to the principle of "rescue + prevention and treatment", and has actively funded hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for children with severe thalassemia. Rescue children with severe postoperative rejection, vigorously increase the popularization rate of relevant scientific knowledge in areas with a high incidence of thalassemia, and help local governments carry out thalassemia prevention and control.
In 2023, Beijing Jingyan Public Welfare Foundation will systematically upgrade the thalassemia action and officially launch the "Zero Thalassemia Plan" to provide financial and technical support to local governments to promote the provision of free thalassemia screening, diagnosis and medical intervention services for people of marriage age and childbearing age in areas with a high incidence of thalassemia. At present, Jingyan Foundation is actively carrying out pilot cooperation with government departments in areas with high incidence of thalassemia to help the government better carry out thalassemia prevention and control work.
The project has completely covered the provinces with a high incidence of thalassemia in Chinese mainland, trained more than 1,300 grassroots doctors, carried out more than 130 scientific popularization and education activities, and funded more than 1,200 children with thalassemia major to undergo hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and postoperative rejection treatment, with a relief amount of more than 51 million yuan.
"Zero thalassaemia" is the long-term goal of the Thalassemia Initiative, and it is also the direction of the Jingyan Foundation. We firmly believe that thalassemia is preventable, controllable and treatable. Saving a child is saving a family. Doing a good job in the prevention and control of thalassemia can promote a virtuous cycle of improving people's livelihood and economic development. In order for the early arrival of "zero thalassemia", Jingyan Foundation has been running on the road of progress. (ENDS).
